ABOUT US Founders Rocio Lopez and Tara Almond were both born and raised in the Magic Skagit Valley and brought together by their love of food and activism.
Tara has spent much of her adult life working as a freelance writer and volunteering for progressive causes. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and currently works as a freelance writer, photographer and political campaign designer. She is former chair of the 40th District Democrats.
Rocio grew up alongside her mother, poet-activist and Skagit Valley College English professor Angelica Guillen, fighting for better labor protections for farmworkers in Skagit County. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice and currently serves on the Advisory Board of Disability Rights Washington. She is also the 40th District Democrats' Affirmative Action & Disability Rights Committee Chair as well as the Skagit County Democrats' State Committee Woman.
But while political ideologies continue to divide Americans, food is still bringing people together in a very real way. Partly inspired by Anthony Bourdain, both wanted to do something to resist an increasingly toxic culture fueled by xenophobia and hate. They also wanted to do something to support small businesses in their community. So over a plate of tacos, they decided to start blogging their food adventures as a way to patronize Skagit County food trucks and restaurants, connect with local families, and perhaps build the fabric of community and supporting each other right here at home one taco at a time.
"This goes beyond politics," Nelson said. "This is about embracing what it truly means to be an American, which is to recognize that we are a diverse nation of immigrants and knowing we are better off because of it. It is also about putting those values into practice in a way that strengthens the community fabric and supports small businesses in a positive and delicious way."
